How to Build a Road Using Roller Compacted Concrete

As mentioned in our previous video, "The Benefits of Roller Compacted Concrete," RCC is a pavement construction solution for local streets and roads. It is ideal for the urban environment as it allows for roads to be quickly reopened for traffic in as little as one day, as well as the long-term durability and high-performance characteristics of conventional concrete pavements. In this video, learn how to build with this type of pavement and hear about the specific requirements for a successful project.

When building an RCC pavement, the key components to high quality construction are:

• Mix design
• Mix production
• Placement
• Compaction
• Jointing
• Curing

The basic ingredients of RCC are sand, aggregates, cement and water. A systematic approach should be taken during the mix design process to determine each of their quantities to obtain a zero slump mix. This process requires experience and knowledge of the local materials. Mixing is usually done with a pug mill or central mix plant near the work site, and concrete is delivered in dump trucks.

The next step in the process is placement of the concrete. The concrete is placed and compacted while it is still fresh and workable, usually within 60 minutes of mixing. In the case of roller compacted concrete, the mix is much drier than conventional concrete. Because of this, it is recommended to use high-density asphalt pavers that are equipped with tamping bars to compact the material as it passes through the screeds. These types of pavers are able to achieve greater than 90% of maximum density directly behind the paver. Monitoring the moisture content of the aggregate source and the concrete directly after placement is strongly encouraged.

Finally, the concrete is jointed and cured. As with all concrete paving, proper curing techniques are crucial to help the RCC gain strength, improve surface durability, and eliminate random cracks. CEMEX recommends using a white concrete curing compound that should be applied immediately after final compaction at a high-application rate to minimize water evaporation. Care should be taken to cover the surface and edges of the pavement. Before construction begins, a jointing plan should already be in place to identify where the saw cuts and isolation joints will be needed. Saw-cutting joints will enhance performance and aesthetics. CEMEX can work closely with you to develop the jointing plan.

The result is a paved surface that is durable, economical, environmentally-friendly, and ready to use in days.
